Roto Grip Idol Helios | Ball Review

The new benchmark ball is LIVE. The Idol Helios is set to be the first ball out of so many arsenals in 2022, and I am HERE FOR IT.

I was a huge fan of the original Idol by Roto Grip. “Barney” as we called it was one of the most consistent reacting balls I’ve ever had and when they announced the Helios, I couldn’t have been more excited. The IKON core wrapped in the new XtremeTrax cover already seems to be a great combination keeping up with the changes in oil viscosity and volume so many bowlers are experiencing coming into 2022.

All shots were filmed on a fresh house shot

Using the 2LS system, we put a 5x5x2.75 layout on the Helios to make sure we didn’t amplify it’s strength and let it be the benchmark that it is. The longer pin distance does allow it to get down the lane a little easier, but still have a good even response to friction and continuation through pins. It handles bigger angles through the fronts surprisingly well which I am guessing will fade over time, but so far, it can strike from many angles, speeds and rotations which I really appreciate.

Roto Grip already knew the IKON core was a proven entity. There’s a reason that this is the 5th time they’ve used it. So the release of the Helios is a simple one. Update the cover, use the great core, make a great ball. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

So, if you enjoyed the original Idol or just need a new benchmark, I would consider the Helios. Plus, it’s hot orange, so you’ll at least look good throwing it even if you’re as bas as me.
