To be fair, when they announced the Nova, I wasn’t terribly excited. Already having a 900 Global Reality and a Roto Grip RST X-2, I wasn’t thinking I would need another big asymmetrical ball, but after some convincing, I figured I would give it a shot. I regretted not getting a Code X when it came out, and this is a similar formula. Weaker cover on a very strong core and I think it worked out pretty well for the guys over at SPI.

Using the 2LS system, we put a 4.5×5.5×4.5 layout on the Nova. This is a good benchmark layout for me to simply see what a ball has. Not intentionally strong or weak, this layout gives me the best idea of what a ball is worth.
Overall, I enjoy the Nova. It’s not an everyday use ball for me, but for a big asym, it is more accessible than a Proton Physix or Reality and a touch more predictable than the RST X-2 or the Altered Reality. It is very sensitive to hand position at release, so if you’re having an off day, it might not be a great option, HOWEVER, if you can be consistent at the bottom, I don’t know if there’s a ball with a more satisfying front to back reaction than the Nova. The motion is very true to the skid, hook and roll phases and allows you to really see what a pattern might give you.
The other cool thing about the Nova is that is ties together the asymmetrical balls in the SPI line. None of us need them all, but the options allow us to match up with the ones that pair well with our game. Some of us need more cover, some more core. No matter what suits us best, from the Rubicon, UFO, RST, Reality, Code, Physix and Parallax lines, there’s two or three in there that can fill out your arsenal the right way depending on who you are and what you like to bowl.
